Burmese politician. He was a founder and
leader of the Anti-Fascist People's Freedom
League, which led Burma's fight for
independence from Great Britain. During World
War II he collaborated first with Japan and
then with the UK. In 1947 he became head of
Burma's provisional government but was
assassinated the same year by political
opponents; Burma (now Myanmar) became
independent in 1948. Imprisoned for his
nationalist activities while a student in
Rangoon, Aung escaped to Japan 1940.
He returned to lead the Burma Independence
Army, which assisted the Japanese invasion
1942, and became defence minister in the
puppet government set up. Before long,
however, he secretly contacted the Resistance
movement, and from Mar 1945 openly cooperated
with the British in the expulsion of the
Japanese. He was assassinated by political
opponents July 1947.
